For example, colored shampoos and conditioners leave a little hue every time you wash, gradually getting brighter, while semi-permanent color and henna stains the hair upon application. One isn't necessarily better than the other-all deposit color onto the surface of the hair-they just function a bit differently, says Norris. When shopping, it's important to note there are many different types, including direct dyes (sprays and chalk, for example), semi-permanent, colored shampoos and conditioners, henna, and toners. "The result is typically softer and shinier hair." Another big upside of temporary color? They don’t contain the same kind of harsh chemicals found in permanent dyes, says Fae Norris, a stylist at KaRu Salon in Austin. "Temporary hair dye washes out within five to 10 shampoos," says Trey Gillen, a stylist at Ceron Hair Studio in Houston. If you've always want to experiment with a trendy new shade, but don't have the guts to go all in on the first try, temporary hair color is a great at-home solution.
